Welcome! I am an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at MIT. My book, Regime Threats and State Solutions, (Cambridge University Press, Studies in Comparative Politics), examines the politicization of the public sector in Kenya. It was one of Foreign Affairs’ Best Books of 2020, received APSA’s 2021 Robert A. Dahl Award, and won ASA’s 2021 Bethwell A. Ogot Award. Other research has been published or is forthoming at numerous outlets including American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of Politics, and World Politics. I also write for public audiences on the politics of my native Sudan. See op-eds about the country's uprising (here) and stalled transition (here), as well as a longer essay (here) on the recent outbreak of armed conflict.
Before coming to MIT, I was as Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. For more on my research, please see my publications, working papers, and cv. You can find me on Google Scholar (here) and I tweet from @MaiOHassan.
